The End of an Era

Dear Crochet Along-ers,

You may have noticed that, although we are up to almost 100 members, the number of active members has dwindled over the past few months until there are now only a few of us still posting. Administering the site and the theme changes takes us a lot of time, and as enthusiasm seems to be waning we just can’t justify spending all that time any more.

It is with great regret that we have decided that we have to close down this group.

It’s not as dire as it sounds: almost all of us have our own blogs, so we can still follow each others’ crocheting adventures. And if you don’t have a blog, maybe this is an opportunity for you to start one! Wordpress provides a 100% free service (it’s what we used for this blog!) and you already have a wordpress username if you are a Crochet Along member, so why not go to http://www.wordpress.com and sign up for your own blog?

Whether or not you choose to blog, there are other forums and online communities available for you to show off your completed crochet projects and post questions. We like the following sites:

New and old bloggers alike, feel free to leave a comment on this post with the link to your blog, so we can all add each other to our feed readers.  We will leave comments open for a while so everyone has a chance to say au revoir and pass on our website links. We’ll also leave the site up for the forseeable future, as a reference.

Thank you so much for being a part of this site! We have really enjoyed developing this community with you all, and we hope you understand our reasons for having to close it down. It has been a very difficult decision for us to make.

Keep on crocheting!

Love,
June & Eve

Wow, it’s August already – how did that happen?! The group has been pretty quiet lately – I’m sure we have a lot of other things vying for our attention in these summer months! So, let’s keep going with the Work In Progress theme for August and see what we can get completed…

In other news: we’re currently cleaning up the Crochet Along Flickr group – we just noticed that it has got swamped with pics that aren’t relevant to our group! This will take some time to complete, as we have to be careful not to remove pics that should be kept in the group. To keep it clean in future, only Crochet Along members may join the group in future, and we’ve added a daily posting limit of 2 pics per day. Please remember to only post pics that support your Crochet Along posts, to keep our eye candy pool nice and clear 🙂

Now, back to the theme: I have some amigurumi on the go (of course) and a tunisian crochet scarflet (above) that I started last winter but never completed. Maybe that should be my WIP goal for this month! What are you working on right now? Leave a comment on this post and fill us in on your current crochet work in progress…

Happy July, everyone! Today is the first day of our new theme: Work In Progress (or WIP for short). The idea of this theme is to finish up some of those crocheted projects you have lying around that you just never seem to find the time to complete.

Of course, this also means that if you’re still working on some summer crochet or amigurumi from the old theme, this would be a great time to finish them up and post them here! WIP will run for the whole of July.

You may have noticed our wonderful new banner, created by our own jbirren, and featuring a lovely watercolour by the talented Susan Beauchemin – click through to her blog to see some more of her artwork. Thanks to Jaime for creating the banner and to Susan for graciously allowing us to use her crochet hook painting.

Welcome to the new theme! Post as much as you like – we want to see all your crocheted projects 🙂

I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but it’s been really hot here this week! Unfortunately my polar bear can’t really keep me cool, but he’s keeping me happy, anyway:

crocheted polar bear close up

Remember, theme change approaching on July 1st: the new month-long theme will be WIP (Work In Progress) – a perfect opportunity to finish up some of those crochet projects you started and didn’t get around to finishing! We don’t have a banner image for the theme yet… Eve was going to make one, but she’s indisposed. Would anyone like to volunteer to make one? Let me know if you do!

The parameters:

  • Text has to say ‘Crochet Along’, and WIP or Work in Progress – you can choose!
  • Size of image is 760 pixels wide by 190 pixels high.
  • Any images you use must be copyright free, or you must get the permission of the copyright holder(s) before we can use the banner.

If there are no takers, I’ll whip up a banner for us on June 30th 🙂

It’s finally time to unveil our secret project! Folding Trees is a new international collaboration that June and I have set up together.

Folding Trees - the best tutorials and paper creations online

There is a huge variety of crafts that can be made from a humble piece of paper: origami, paper art, quilling, papercutting, recycled paper crafts – to name just a few. Our aim with Folding Trees is to collect the best tutorials we have found on the net, inspire people by highlighting amazing paper creations from talented artists and crafters, and share our own paper crafts and tutorials.

On the site today, June is sharing a tutorial to make these puffy origami lucky stars from strips cut from magazine pages:

Folding Trees lucky stars tutorial

We invite people to share links to their own tutorials or point us to inspirational paper crafts they have seen. Everyone is also welcome to join the Folding Trees Flickr group and share photos of all their crafty paper projects with us! We will feature some of the submissions on the site.

June and I hope you’ll like our new project, and we’re looking forward to seeing you at FoldingTrees.com!

New theme for July

Hi Everybody,

June is still not over but it is almost time to say goodbye to Summer Crochet (including Amis) and start thinking of a new theme.

To make things a little less complicated with votes etc. June and I were thinking to have a theme where everybody could show their W.I.P.s. Anything crocheted you are working on right now; show us some action photos and of course as always the finished work.

So what do you think? It would only be for 1 month and I am sure everybody has some of those half-finished projects stuffed in bags in cupboards… 🙂

Don’t forget to leave your comment….! and for people who have been lurking on this blog now is an awesome time to come and join us.

The picture of the flowers is from Arbel Egger (see link at the top of the page).

You have probably all seen the amazing work of Gooseflesh. She crochets freeform sea creatures out of plastic shopping bags and other materials. Have a look through Helle’s site and Flickr photos to get inspired.

Have a look on Instructables for an excellent tutorial with pics on how to make yarn from your collection of plastic shopping bags.

I found a pattern for this Round Plastic Bag Tote  from Marlo’s Crochet corner.

I hope you feel inspired to make something beautiful out of something that normally ends up in the rubbish. I would love to see some amigurumi made out of this, so if you have done some come and show it!

Jaime is right, our site has been pretty quiet over the last month, so we’re going to shake it up a bit around here to get things going again!

  1. As of June 1st, the Crochet Along theme will be expanded to include ANY amigurumi as well as Summer Crochet. So start taking pics of any ami you’ve made throughout May, because as of June 1st, we want to see them all!
  2. I’d like to thank Tracie for helping me out with the admin side of the site for the past few months. We’re having another admin change this week, and the return of a familiar face 🙂 Stay tuned on June 1st for more on that!
  3. Just an aside: you may have noticed that WordPress now includes a graphic icon when you leave a comment. If you want your own personal avatar to show up, just make sure you’re logged in before posting your comments, otherwise you’ll get one of those random coloured patterns as your icon 🙂

Here’s one of my latest while we wait – I’ll show you some more on Sunday!

So, get your latest amigurumi together, or start making some new ones, and get ready to post them on or after June 1st (that’s this Sunday!) – we’ll remind you when it’s time!

closeup of mushies

Here is one last book thong for small crochet. I hadn’t had a chance to load the pictures.

I didn’t want to do amigurumi as I wanted the mushie to lay flat…..I like the way they turned out.

Small Crochet has been a wonderful theme, with lots of great work being completed! And it’s not over yet – we still have until the end of April to keep Small Crocheting. But I’d like us to start thinking now about the next theme that will run May – June, as Tracie and I will need some time to get the admin side together before the theme starts.

You probably know the drill by now; please comment on this post with your theme ideas – please try to keep them quite general so we aren’t limited as to what we can make! To get us started, here are some leftover suggestions from previous months:

  • Amigurumi revisited
  • Bags/purses
  • Crocheted Embellishments (flowers etc)
  • Clothing
  • Baby stuff
  • Wire crochet
  • Useful crochet (coasters, cozies, etc)
  • Your ideas..?

Votes? Other suggestions? Please comment below! We have 77 members now, so I expect to see 76 comments on this post 😉

Hi

Hi there, I’m Andrea. Just joined up but have been working on a giant granny square blanket for my oldest son. He’s 4-years-old and picked out the colors and made up the color pattern.

60 members!

Woohoo! We’re up to 60 members now! Welcome to all the newcomers – please feel free to post and introduce yourselves to us all.

My granny throw update: I would have finished it last night, but I tried it on my chair for size, and it’s way too narrow 😦   So now I have to make another 13 squares. I somehow don’t think I’ll finish it before the new theme starts! Oh well, I’ll wait to show you the finished throw…

Small Crochet links please!

Thanks to those who responded to the new theme post. I think everyone likes the idea of Small Crochet – a broad theme where you can crochet anything that’s smaller than about 6 inches. Hopefully this will provide lots of quick projects so we’ll all have time to fit in a few!

Here are some ideas for things that could fit into this theme:

  • Amigurumi
  • Small wearables: headbands, wrist warmers, etc
  • Coffee mug cosies / iPod cosies, etc
  • Baby booties
  • Flowers & embellishments
  • Small thread or wire crocheted items
  • Anything else that’s small and crocheted…

Now we need some links for our sidebar! We have lots of amigurumi patterns already on the Past Theme Links page, but if you know of any other free patterns or techniques that would fit the Small Crochet theme, please e-mail them to Tracie.

Tracie and I will work on the new theme so we’re ready to begin Small Crocheting on March 1st.

In the meantime, it’s the last week of the Granny Square theme, and I am determined to get my throw finished so I can show you how it turned out before the theme ends 🙂

Next theme ideas?

Hi All,

I can’t believe how fast this year is moving! The Granny Squares theme will run until the end of this month. How are you all doing with your Granny pieces? I’m about 75% through my squares, and then I’ll have all the joining to do. I still hope to finish by the end of February! I’d like to propose a new rule for the group: if you have started making something during a theme, but haven’t finished it before the theme ends, please do show it to us whenever you do finish. I’d hate to think we’d miss out on seeing your finished work just because you didn’t have time to finish it during the theme.

granny squares in progress by planetjune
A Granny wreath? Nope, it’s just my squares in progress…

We need to start thinking about what our next theme will be. To get us started, I’ve made a list of suggestions that were suggested previously, but we don’t have to pick from this list! I’d like a decision by this Friday (Feb 22nd), to give us time to set up the new theme for March 1st. Here’s the list so far:

  • Amigurumi revisited
  • Bags/purses
  • Crocheted Embellishments (flowers etc)
  • Clothing
  • Baby stuff
  • Your ideas..?

Please reply and let us know which themes appeal to you, and any other ideas you may have for the next theme. Check the comments to see what’s been suggested so far!

I’ve started!

I’ve picked out my colours and bought the yarn for my granny throw. It’s exciting! These are my first squares:

first granny squares

Now I just have to make another 36 squares like these…

In other news, now we have so many group members I’ve been wondering who we all are! I’ve added a new page called Users (the link is at the top, above the banner), with a list of our members and their webpages. I took the list from everyone’s wordpress accounts. If you’re not on the list and would like to be, let me know your username and website and I’ll add you! Check them out and see who else is Crocheting Along 🙂

new look!

Hi again – I’ve been making some more tweaks to the site. I just noticed that the old site design did not say “by planetjune” etc at the top of each post, so we had no way of knowing who wrote each post, unless they signed it. Oops! So I’ve changed the site theme to fix that. I like the new look – what do you all think?

I’ve also added monthly archives and a Search box into the sidebar. I hope you like the changes! Let me know if you think of any more improvements I can make.

how are you doing?

We’ve been getting lots of new members recently – I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all newcomers! Please feel free to write an introductory post to tell us a little bit about yourself so we can welcome you properly. To anyone else who would like to join, e-mail me and I’ll set you up – the more the merrier!

I’ve been doing a bit of clean-up on the site to make it easier for us to use. The links in the sidebar now just relate to the current theme. If you’re looking for all the other links (from the Amigurumi and Christmas themes), just click ‘Past Theme Links’ from the top of the page (just above the Granny Squares banner) and you will find them all.

How’s everyone doing with their granny squares? Personally, I’ve decided to attempt a mini-granny afghan to liven up the back of my desk chair. I just need to choose my colours and go yarn shopping (oh what a hardship that will be!) and then I’ll be ready to start.

Don’t feel like you have to wait to post until you’ve made a whole blanket, hat, purse, or any of the other granny square projects – if you’ve just made your first square, why not show it off? Can’t figure out how to make one? Post your question and we’ll help you figure it out.

This theme runs until the end of February, so we still have plenty of time to get started and make something. And even if you only have time to make one square… well look at that, you’ve just made a nice coaster or potholder 🙂

Happy 2008!

Hey, gang! Most people know me as iCrochet, especially in Ravelry, but my first name is Tracie. I’ll be helping out here on the Crochet Along blog as Co-Editor in this new year. I’ve been crocheting for two years now, and as the overworked pun goes, “I’m Hooked!” I really enjoy experiencing what a hook and yarn or other material can become, so I’m looking forward to seeing what all the crocheters here come up with through all the different alongs.

I live in Kansas, with my husband, daughter, & pets. Not only do I crochet & attempt to write some of my own patterns, but I also dabble in other crafts as well. I enjoy everything from scrapbooking to sewing to playing with buttons. I also enjoy writing, although I don’t do it as much as I used to.

It’s going to be a great year, and I really look forward to sharing the fun of crochet with all of you!

Wanted: New Administrator

Hi Everybody,

I know you have not seen any posts from me for a long time. My life has been turned up side down over the last couple of weeks. Don’t worry it is all good but it has been quite a journey.  Unfortunately I feel I cannot give enough time to the Crochet Along and was hoping that somebody would like to take over my task.

Please leave a comment here if you feel inspired and think you can give around 15-30 min a day of your time.

Thanks! Eve
